Postpartum Bleeding vs. Period: What’s the Difference After Childbirth?

After having a baby, a lot of new moms wonder, “Is this bleeding a normal postpartum discharge, or is it my period?”

Your body goes through huge changes after delivery. Understanding the difference between postpartum bleeding (lochia) and a regular period helps you track your recovery and know what to expect.

1. What is Postpartum Bleeding (Lochia)?

Right after childbirth, your uterus starts clearing out and healing. The blood, tissue, and mucus that leave your body during this process is called lochia.

  • Duration: It happens after both vaginal and C-section births and usually lasts for about 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Color changes: It starts off bright red (days 1–4), turns pink or brown (days 4–10), and eventually becomes yellowish-white before stopping completely.

2. When Does Your First Period Return?

  • If you are formula feeding: Your first period can return within 6 to 8 weeks.
  • If you are exclusively breastfeeding: Hormones can delay your cycle, meaning your period might not return for 6 months to a year.
